A Return to the German Church School,
Addis Abeba, Ethiopia - February 12. - 14. 2001

Digression:

On February 21, I once more had the opportunity to visit at the GCS. On this day the mid-year report cards were given out. This is done as follows:
Handing out of the report cards All pupils gather in the school yard and after a short speech of the director the three best pupils from each class the are publicly called forward. Handing out of the report cards

They are presented with a small reward as a testimonial for their good performance.
As you would imagine, this serves as an incentive to other pupils to improve their performance.
As I mentioned in my year 2000 report, the blind children are often among the best students.
Handing out of the report cards Handing out of the report cards For instance in the 6th grade the almost blind Ashenafi Fanta was honored as the second best pupil (in the past year I had visited him at home). Also in the other grades blind children were repeatedly found among the best three pupils. One of them, a boy named Alemayehu, has become well-known through a video by the "Kindernothilfe" about the Integrated Education project at the GCS.
